“When historical visibility has faded, when the present tense of testimony loses its power to arrest, then the displacements of memory and the indirections of art offer us the image of our psychic survival” Bhabha

Manuel Mathieu was born in Haiti the year of the Haitian uprising that marked the end of the Duvalier era. He was named after the novel Gouverneurs de la rosée (Master of the Dew) a Classic of Haitian Literature. He obtained in 2016 a Master in fine arts at Goldsmiths university of London. Manuel is known as an interdisciplinary artist, but is always drawn back to his paintbrushes. In 2012 the MAI published a monograph, Abysse/Abyss, on his work summarizing his painting practice. Mathieu had a solo show at the Institute of Contemporary Art, London. Fatos Üstek—curator of the 2015 revival of fig 2 and assistant curator of the 10th Gwangju Biennial–selected him from a pool of over 230 applicants to be featured at the ICA in the penultimate week of the fig 2 program, marking him as an artist poised for success mid-way through his studies. His  most recent Solo shows are Truth to Power at Tiwani in London, a slolo booth at the Armory NY and Nobody is Watching in Chicago at Kavi GuptaMathieu's work has also been shown in several museums like Museum of the Americas, the Museum of Civilization in Quebec, at the Grand Palais in Paris and will be shown at the Museum of Fine Arts of Montreal in May 2018.
